Play up your curves & downplay your size

There are certain ‘guidelines’ and style tips that help any woman feel better in what she is wearing and looking her beautiful best.

I realise I may have mentioned some if not all the points previously however, I keep getting asked by many women out there... what can I do to play up my curves and downplay my size? Know your body and what looks most flattering. Every detail counts from head to toe.

Be proud of your curves and don’t be afraid to wear form-fitting clothes that show off your assets. Confidence is key.

Define your waist. A belted dress in a dark, matte colour highlights your curves. Baggier, unstructured clothing doesn’t help size hide. In fact, loose clothing makes one look bigger... A fact!

Play with proportion regardless of your size. For example, a cropped jacket/blazer (preferably shaped) over a longer top with leggings/jeggings/skinny jeans adds length to your silhouette and makes you look long and lean.

Heels are one of the best options when you want to add height and a feminine touch. Heels are definitely the way to go. This season, there are many heels to choose from even comfortable styles like the wedge.

Key pieces for any wardrobe:

  • Bootleg jeans
  • Simple skirt
  • Full skirt
  • Sheath dress
  • Cap sleeve dress
  • Drapey dress
  • Shaped blazer
  • Tie-neck sweater
  • V-neck blouse
  • Blousy top
  • Three-quarter sleeve cardi/top
  • Pretty shell

Have fun shopping!

Be well.

What's HOT for Spring 2010

Spring is approaching us here in New York (thank goodness) and there are many trends that are emerging in fashion and beauty. Take what you will on board...

Some of the HOT list includes:

  • Short hemlines are in – show off your legs in above the knee lengths to thigh-high heights
  • The clog sandal is a spring favourite in earthy/natural tones
  • Metallic accessories glam up any outfit – shoes, bags & belts are fab against natural, skin tones
  • Bangles and cuffs continue to make an outfit pop and dazzle
  • Oversize sunnies are big again for spring (when aren't they though)
  • Heavy fringes and long bobs (past the shoulder lengths) are a fresh look for spring 2010
  • Hair is soft, loose and undone – no sculpted dos
  • Soft natural highlights are in demand
  • Lucite jewelry is back – go for big, chunky pieces that make a bold statement
  • The hot colour for nail polish is a warm gray for spring, an alternative punch to the natural tones
  • Lips should be highlighted in red, pink and coral hues for spring – make it vibrant
  • The updated denim for the season is chic chambray

Have fun with fashion and beauty. Don’t take it seriously and make it your own! Have the confidence to wear it and mix it.

Have a wonderful week.

Be well.

Know your body

This last week, Jean3 raised a good point or two in her comment dated August 23. Can bigger girls wear skinny jeans? Of course they can!

I believe it's really important to know your body and know what suits you, your body type and what you feel comfortable and confident in. This is crucial in pulling off any look or outfit.

I know of women who are a size 16-18 and wear skinny jeans and they look fabulous! Not all styles are going to "fit/suit" every body so it is key in understanding what works for you.

I personally am a fan of the skinny jean. It doesn't mean you buy a size too small or anything like that. Try clothes on, check yourself out in them and possibly get a second or third opinion. This never hurt anyone. In fact, I'd recommend you do the above until you get a sense of your own style and first hand experience of what looks good on you and you gain confidence in what looks good on your frame/body.

If you're not comfortable in skinny jeans, that's OK. There is nothing wrong with that. Not all styles are going to work for everyone and every body.

I'm simply letting you know what the trends are if you are interested in knowing what is fashionable on the streets of New York for the upcoming seasons. That's NOT to say that other styles aren't or that you shouldn't be seen in anything but.

For example, a boot-cut or flare style jean is always flattering to those who have heavier legs than upper body and aren't comfortable in leg defining skinny jeans. Again... know your body type and what works for you.

It may take some time to master however, take your time and be patient. Don't be afraid to try new styles, colours and approaches. This is how we learn to look good and feel great about ourselves... no matter what size we are.

Have a wonderful week.

Be well.

Favourite SARA spring style: Heels, jeans, a sexy v-neck top and a trench coat. Can't go wrong with that!

Life in the big apple (New York): Six years and loving it! What an amazing experience and opportunity.

SARA discovered me... I was at a party for one of the Director's where I previously worked (publishing company) and was spotted on the dance floor by a fashion photographer.

A week after the party, the Director's girlfriend called me and mentioned that her photographer friend had asked about me and inquired whether I had modeled before. She knew I had and asked me if it was alright if she gave the photographer my number. I went over to the photographer's house, tried on some samples and took some polaroids of me that were sent to her client... SARA.

That was almost eight years ago and the rest they say, is history! And I thought my modeling days were over!
